Basically, it's a Ironbark Protector that has it's cost split up over 2 turns. You loose 1 attack, but It can be played on turn 5 vs turn 8.
The only other taunt with 8 Health is Deathlord. Only other taunt card with a higher heath is Ancient of War in taunt mode. Good card to give Ancestral Spirit
Combo Options:
Turn 5 + Turn 6 Windfury (spell). Leaves 1 mana remaining.
Turn 6 + Turn 7 Windspeaker
14 damage is nothing to sneeze at.
5 mana 3 overload is objectively so much better than 8 mana, it's not even comparable.
Being so big a creature makes it draw every kind of removal you can think of, clearing the way for your legends and such, but with the penalty next turn you often get little benefit minus making them waste removal and then are cramped the next turn with nothing to show for it on the board. I've REALLY tried to love this card but it just never works out for me
You shouldn't play it as target for removals, but rather bait removals and save it as your last stand. No high-cost legendaries have taunt, and this really matters. Comboed with Ancestral Spirit it have really not so much removal options that will still hurt. Polymorph, Sap, Hex. Silence will still leave 7/8 creature. Full-removals will leave resurrected creature.
Most of the time it's a lockdown, next turn (or even same turn) you put [card]Vitality Totem[/card] or [card]Mana Tide Totem[/card] and just wait until he surrenders, or copy it with [card]Faceless Manipulator[/card], or [card]Lava Shock[/card] into [card]Kel'Thuzad[/card].
Polymorph wil leave a 1/1 with no taunt, hex would leave a 0/1 with taunt, sap would leave you nothing except the locked up crystals, only silence would leave a 7/8 with no taunt
I thought it's obvious, as I listed removals that hurt. If you play against someone who don't have those or wasted one of those before you play it - you probably gonna make huge impact. I mean, 16 hp taunt is nothing to joke about, it's game-winning by itself.
qft if you're playing against decks that pretty much guarantees to have hard removal by turn 5, just don't play him on curve. drop a sludge instead if you need taunt and t6 fire elemental would probably take that hard removal that was gonna be cast on earth elemental.
I hate the 3 mana lock-up next turn, but you still get a high value creature that your opponent has to deal with.
I tried running this in a generic deck and the drawback usually wasn't worth it. However, if you build around this and other powerful minions with stuff like Ancestral Spirit and Faceless Manipulator, it can be extremely hard to fight through.
And Reincarnate shenanigans.
